In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States

In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States

Filled with a wide array of illustrations, this book offers a fresh perspective on surrealism as it spotlights the important role that North American women artists played in the movement. The surrealist movement in art is most often identified with male artists, many of whom objectified women in their paintings, casting them as sexual or symbolic ideals. Conversely, the female artists of the movement delved primarily into their own subconscious and dreams. This volume features the work of
48 Mexican and U.S.-based women artists whose contributions to the surrealist movement span more than four decades and whose work was both influential and radical in its own right. Thematically arranged, it includes more than 250 full-color images along with several essays exploring the effects of
geography and gender on the movement. This unique book illustrates surrealism as a gateway to self-discovery, especially in North America, where women artists were freed from oppressive European traditions and the vagaries of war. From 1931, the year of Lee Miller's first surreal photograph, to 1968,
when Yayoi Kusama presented her landmark happening "Alice in Wonderland" in New York's Central Park, the artists and works depicted here are both significant and extraordinary in their explorations of personal and universal truths.

The Cheshire Cat! I made this piece for a friend who's decorating her baby's nursery in an Alice in Wonderland theme. This is my own unique work, based on the Disney character. I made up my own pattern & used fabric scraps from my stash. It's machine-appliqued with hand-embroidered details. The frame is covered in fabric also.

Scoreboard, Baby: A Story of College Football, Crime, and Complicity

Winner of the 2011 Edgar Award, Best Crime Fact category

The adjectives associated with the University of Washington's 2000 football season mystical, magical, miraculous changed when Ken Armstrong and Nick Perry's four-part exposA?A© of the 2000 Huskies hit the newspaper stands: "explosive . . . chilling" (Sports Illustrated), "blistering" (Baltimore Sun), "shocking . . . appalling" (Tacoma News Tribune), "astounding" (ESPN), "jaw-dropping" (Orlando Sentinel).

Now, in Scoreboard, Baby, Armstrong and Perry go behind the scenes of the Huskies Cinderella story to reveal a timeless morality tale about the price of obsession, the creep of fanaticism, and the ways in which a community can lose even when its team wins. The authors unearth the true story from firsthand interviews and thousands of pages of documents: the forensic report on a bloody fingerprint; the notes of a detective investigating allegations of rape; confidential memoranda of prosecutors; and the criminal records of the dozen-plus players arrested that year with scant mention in the newspapers and minimal consequences in the courts. The statement of a judge, sentencing one player to thirty days in jail, says it all: "to be served after football season."

Christmas Greetings

Christmas Greetings

I wanted to share a Christmas greeting with my Flickr friends.
This ornament is 59 years old - almost as old as I am! But it still hangs prominently on our tree! Perhaps as I should!
I decided that, rather than writing a new Christmas story this year, I would recycle the one from last year. Isn't that part of being "green"? And, it works for "Wonderful World", "White Christmas" and "A Christmas Carol"!

Christmas Memories

Christmas comes gradually to our house - gradually and somewhat gently.

Of course, it wasn't always like that. When I was a child, Christmas arrived suddenly! It came on Christmas morning when we got out of bed and, opening the living room door, found that the room had been magically transformed by a fully decorated tree.

Santa always left our stockings at the foot of our beds. I still recall waking up and wiggling my toes to see if the stocking was there - and the joy and wonderment of finding it and realizing who had put it there! When you moved it with your foot it made a special sound that cannot be compared to anything else.

But it all happened on that one day - which made the whole experience that much more exciting! Mind you, there were still events that led up to Christmas - advertising on radio and TV still encouraged us to get our shopping done early and there was still the Santa Claus parade. More important than the parade was the opening of "Toyland." Yes, my friends, I remember when there were no malls, the stores were on one or two streets downtown and did not keep a full selection of toys all year long. “Toyland” meant that Christmas was really coming!

But in spite of this limited hype, things didn't start to get serious until the party on the last day of school. After school had ended I would get money from Mom - perhaps as much as two or three dollars - to go downtown and buy something special for my grandmother. It was usually a "nic-nac" to go on her mantle. Dogs, cats and other cute animals were very popular with me and, as a result, Nanny's mantle resembled a menagerie. I am sure that many a saleslady was silently screaming at how much time it took me to choose “just the right piece.”

On Christmas Eve morning my sister and I would take the bus to Nanny's house to get a pair of her stockings. She wore those special "old lady" stockings that were perfect for hanging up. Nylons just didn't seem to work! We would phone her in the morning. "Nanny, do you have any of your stockings you could let us borrow?"
The answer was always “yes” - for all her many grandchildren. I'm surprised that Christmas Day found her with any stockings left to wear.

The bus ride to her house was also special. People seemed to act differently because it was Christmas Eve. People smiled more and we heard those magic words - Merry Christmas! - often.

Over the years our habits have changed. Christmas doesn’t arrive as suddenly as when I was a child. I couldn’t possibly do what my parents did on Christmas Eve. But we are still a family that decorates the tree just before Christmas – as opposed to just before Remembrance Day - and I am, purposely, one of the last on my street to decorate the outside of my house. But mid November finds us at the tree farm picking out our tree and around the end of November we start to see hints of Christmas. The ornate wall hanging suddenly shows up. Then, a bit later, the everyday mugs disappear and are replaced by the Christmas mugs. By Advent Sunday, the ceramic Christmas tree will have appeared. And a bit later, my well-thumbed copy of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” calls out to me. But the tree - in all its glorious and majestic splendor - is still left until almost Christmas. On the other hand, our decorations stay up and the outside lights remain on until January 6 - Twelfth Night.

Bringing out the Christmas decorations is always special. Seeing that particular favourite ornament is like welcoming back an old friend. Seeing the boys’ special ornaments always brings back memories of Christmases past. And even trying to figure out how strings of lights could possibly have twisted themselves that much while sitting for eleven months in a motionless box, is more or less tolerable!

Yes, we are still caught up in the rush of Christmas shopping and the dash to make sure that we have those last minute things which, in spite of having celebrated many Christmases, always seem to get forgotten.

But even so, our Christmas seems to come gradually and gently. Perhaps that fits with how the baby Jesus arrived.

May your Christmas be joyous and gentle.

Wearing a Mask

Wearing a Mask

Sometimes I don’t feel like myself. I feel like I'm just putting on a show, so people wont know how I'm really feeling. Sometimes, I feel like I'm wearing a mask.

I like how happy and innocent this picture looks.

But in reality, I’m not very happy at all. I’m depressed and bipolar. I saw my psychologist on Wednesday and my psychiatrist on Thursday. I’ve pretty much been spilling all my thoughts and worries into my photostream lately, so I guess I should tell you guys a little more about myself.

My name is Makenzie Smith, and I’ve lived in Indiana my whole life – I’m a purebred Hoosier. I’m 15 years old, and a freshman in high school. I’m pretty much sucking at school right now, but I’ll get to that later).

I play the tenor saxophone in the school band, but I pretty much suck at that, too. I’m probably like one of the worst players in the band, seriously.

I love to read and write. Some of my favorite books are Saving Max, A Bride in the Bargain, The Breakable Vow, and the Harry Potter series.’

I am a Happy Potter FREAK. I have read the books and seen the movies WAY too many times to count. I can probably answer any question you were to ask about the series.

My favorite tv shows are Glee, Breaking In, The Big Bang Theory, Wipeout, and Untold Stories of the ER. As for Glee, I am obsessed. I am in love with KLAINE………….they are the best couple on the show, seriously. They are perfect in every way.

My best friend’s name is Kat. And although sometimes we fight, I love her more than anything – I don’t think that I could survive without her. She’s gotten me through anything and everything – breakups, pet and family deaths, injuries and my surgery. She and my friend Shae both actually got me into photography.

I have two dogs – Murphy, he’s a Golden Retriever, and he’s seven. Then there’s Sammy, my baby! He’s a goldendoodle, and he’s four.

Over the summer, I’m going on a cruise to Greece with my grandma. I’m so excited, and I can hardly wait.

My more severe medical problems this year started when I badly sprained my ankle. I had a boot on my foot for a few weeks, and Kat was my book carrier. After that was all done with and gone, I began to feel sick after every time I ate. I was eating mostly saltines for about a month, because they were basically the only thing that I could eat without making me feel sick. There went a week where saltines were quite literally the ONLY thing that I ate. We went to the doctor and I realized that I had lost over 5 pounds in less than a week. Also, along with the nausea, I had a constant pain in my abdomen. Eventually my mom took me to the ER to get it all checked out. The doctors ran some tests, and discovered that I had an ovarian cyst. After about 2 more pain-filled months, we had a surgery to have it removed. It was my first surgery, and I was scared shitless. After two weeks of recovery, I went back to school for finals week.

I now have another cyst, on the OTHER side, so I am once again in CONSTANT PAIN. It really sucks.

I started off this school year with 6 academic classes, and now I only have three. I fell so far behind because I’ve missed so much school that I had to drop three classes, including math and Spanish.

If anyone is still reading this (which I highly doubt…), thank you. Thank you for listening…reading. It show that maybe someone cares.

I’m sorry I haven’t really been the best contact, but…I don’t even know. Sometimes I feel too depressed to even pull myself out of bed in the mornings.

But…I'm working on it, I really am. I have music, photography, and some really amazing friends (you know who you are!).

So…thanks for listening.

Stainless Steel Sheet Metal Screw, Flat Head, Phillips Drive, Self-Drilling Point, #6-20, 1-1/4" Length (Pack of 100)

Sheet metal screws have a pointed end and widely spaced threads. They're self-starting in thin sheet metal, but in thicker materials a drilled hole is recommended.

Stainless steels are used for their corrosion resistance, high-temperature strength, scaling resistance, and low-temperature toughness. These properties account for their extremely wide use in practically every industry. Austenitic Stainless Steels are alloys of iron and carbon that contain between 16% and 30% Chromium, a maximum of 0.15% carbon, along with Nickel (or Manganese), and other alloying elements. The chromium, which helps develop a passive surface oxide film, provides corrosion resistance in stainless steels. Austenitic Stainless Steels are designated by a 3 digit SAE Stainless Steel Grade beginning with the number 3 (e.g. 304, 316). Another common naming convention for Austenitic Stainless Steels are 18/8, 18/10, 18/0, etc. where the 18 refers to the % of Chromium and 8 to the % of Nickel contained in the material.

Flat head fasteners are designed to fit flush to the surface when used with countersunk holes. Length is measured from the top of the head. The Phillips drive style was originally designed so that the driver would slip out under extreme torque, preventing over-tightening and damage to the fastener or the material. Self-Drilling Points are excellent for use with sheet metal.

Baby Green Cheeks: Can we move now?

Baby Green Cheeks: Can we move now?

Almost all the babies (4 out of 5) in one shot. They were actually nice and still for me so I could take a picture. I think they were getting ready to nap.
You can see the one on the right just took a bath. They love baths!
Would you believe these were the same babies just hatched in February?

The 5 babies have been moved into their own cage now. It's filled with lots of things to climb, lots of toys, and flat areas which they love to sleep on. They have adjusted with the move very well. Daddy Gizmo has moved back in with Mommy Tweak and they come over and sit on top of the babies cage sometimes and the babies get all excited.
The babies are eating dry food and seeds for treats. They even take baths every other day.

heron babies

heron babies

This was when i got to go into a mangrove island that happened to be a heron rookery. This small clump of big red mangroves was absolutely FULL of herons. It was ridiculous. we waded in and managed to have a look at some active nests and some of the babies. There really isn't anything to the nests, it is just a bunch of sticks arranged together to make a flat sort of pile. It was really cool but there were some veryunhappy parents flapping about our heads.

Introducing... KOKOSANKA! :)

Introducing... KOKOSANKA! :)

My NEW GIRL.
Finally!

I've known her almost all her life.

I saw her as a tiny pink newborn baby, in the pet shop, for just a few moments. Then I didn't see her for weeks, cos the babies were obsessively guarded by their supermom.
After almost a month of waiting, I could finally take her home.

So, here she is. (she's a bit bigger now than in these pictures)
Her fur colour / pattern remind me of Mocca's (or Julia's Tofu), that is: beige & white.
Her fur is smooth, not furry.
Kokosanka has a big freckle on her left ear.
She's not as beautiful as Chmurka & Buleczka... I'm aware of that, all right?
She's not even photogenic!
Oh dear...

BUT, she has a great, girly personality.
She's younger than Juniorek but ten times smarter.
Grumpy, bossy, very self-confident, odd, loves food, and totally UNAFRAID of anything and anyone.
She's only scared of Balbinka!

Ok, that's all for now - say hello to Kokosanka? :)
(I hope you'll like her)

Care Bears

I took a few mins to get the pictures while looking like I was moving things to the truck and cycling it to make room. Cindy (she finally introduced herself) came back outside and offered me a drink. I thanked her and took a sip. She began to wax sentimental about each item as I placed it in the truck. (I think I know where her daughters got it but it did make for a good back story) The blue bear looks sad I think he knows what is coming.

Rafiqh Tsuyoshi Al-Hafiz & When will my baby start getting teeth?

Rafiqh Tsuyoshi Al-Hafiz & When will my baby start getting teeth?

InsyaAllah, kami sasarkan Rafiqh mampu memperdengarkan bacaan hafazannya sejurus selepas dia boleh berbicara, setelah dia mula diajar mengingati surah2 lazim sejak usianya masih 2bulan...
Gambare baby...
Amacam? Ada gaya wartawan tak? haha
---------------------------------------------------

Lets share an info regarding baby's teeth, hihi... MyLove and I are so excited bila Rafiqh tumbuh gigi. Setiap hari, puluh2 kali belek gigi dia, hahaha...
Note : Info ini dari BabyCenter

Kebiasaannya gigi pertama baby tumbuh sekitar usia 4~7bulan.
By age 3, a child should have a full set of 20 baby teeth, which shouldn't fall out until his permanent teeth are ready to start coming in, around age 6.
Ramai ibubapa dari segenap bangsa di dunia ini percaya kemunculan gigi pertama baby diiringi dengan negative symptoms walaupun ramai pakar yang menolak kepercayaan ini.
In my case, memang nampak Rafiqh quite cranky and couldn't sleep well few days before his first teeth appeared. And of course his biting behavior semakin mengganas!
Somehow, there is a few ways to ease baby's discomfort. Such as, I give him a firm rubber teething toy but it doesn't work on me. He refused to chew it. What a smart boy, haha... Or perhaps I should try to simply rubbing a clean finger gently but firmly over his sore gums to ease the pain temporarily. Or should I start baking teething crackers for him?!

So mama, your new homework for thisweek is making my teething biscuits, please... gambare mama

Believe it or not - not a one of us has any telltale symptoms. What happened was, I brought the baby in this morning for a wicked diaper rash - a symptom, I thought, of his teething.

Not.

He tested postive for strep. No fever. No moodiness. No loss of appetite. Just diaper rash.

So I said, you know..that's it - I'm bringing in the whole family because somebody is carrying it -

Sure enough 1.2.3 and 4 all four kids tested positive.

The doctor just went ahead and wrote scripts out for Pa and I as well.

I'm the one who gets the Z-Pack. :)
